Terms + Conditions

Here’s all the boring stuff … hopefully you’ll agree it’s all above board – we just want to make sure Capture a Chemist stays fun by letting everyone know where they stand. If you have any concerns or suggestions, please leave a comment below.

General Conditions:

ABOUT: Capture a Chemist is a Not-for-Profit organisation whose aims are to promote the understanding of the role played by chemists in society to the worldwide photographic community and through them, the wider public as part of the International Year of Chemistry 2011 (hereafter referred to as IYC2011) … and hopefully to have some fun along the way!

THEME: Photographs submitted to Capture a Chemist should be portraits of people who work in the field of chemistry or where the use of chemistry is vital to their work. In order to be admissible, the photograph should be accompanied by a short passage of text (or a video) that briefly outlines the background of the chemist and the work they do (between 50 and 250 words of text would be ideal or less than 2 mins if in video form).

SUBMISSIONS: Photographs can be submitted to Capture a Chemist via submission to the Capture a Chemist Flickr Pool or via email

COPYRIGHT: The photographer retains full copyright and ownership of any photographs submitted to Capture a Chemist. By submitting your photograph to Capture a Chemist you grant an irrevocable licence to the organisers of Capture a Chemist, the Royal Society of Chemistry and IYC2011 to use your photograph in the promotion of Capture a Chemist for up to 3 years.

“TIME FOR IMAGES”: Any image submitted to Capture a Chemist should also be sent to the Chemist. At minimum photographs should be provided to them in internet-ready form. That is; JPG format, sRGB colour space and a minimum of 1024px on the long side. Any change to these specifications must be agreed between Chemists and Photographers prior to the event. A discrete watermark with the photographer’s logo/details is acceptable. The Photographer should ensure they provide a usage license to the Chemist which outlines how they can use the provided images and any constraints the Photographer wishes to put on the usage. It would be advisable to discuss the limitations of this licence before meeting to shoot to avoid disappointment later!

Model Release:

A large part of Capture a Chemist is about producing and sharing images so we need your permission to do so.

By participating in Capture a Chemist or appearing at any Capture a Chemist event, you agree to grant participating photographers, Capture a Chemist, the Royal Society of Chemistry and IYC2011, their assigns, licensees, successors in interest, legal representatives, and heirs the irrevocable right to use your name, picture, portrait, or photograph in all forms and in all media and in all manners, without any restriction as to changes or alterations for advertising, trade, promotion, exhibition, or any other lawful purposes associated with the running of Capture a Chemist, and you waive any right to inspect or approve the photograph(s) or finished version(s) incorporating the photograph(s), including written copy that may be created and appear in connection therewith.
You agree to release and hold harmless participating photographers, Capture a Chemist, the Royal Society of Chemistry, IYC2011, their assigns, licensees, successors in interest, legal representatives and heirs from any liability by virtue of any blurring, distortion, alteration, optical illusion, or use in composite form whether intentional or otherwise, that may occur or be produced in the taking of the photographs, or in any processing tending toward the completion of the finished product. You agree that the participating photographer owns the copyright in these photographs and hereby waive any claims you may have based on any usage of the photographs or works derived therefrom.

Exhibition / Photobook:

An exhibition highlighting the best work submitted to Capture a Chemist is planned for late in 2011. A photobook may follow, from the sale of which any proceeds will go to charity. Additional requirements will need to be met should you wish for your work to be included in any exhibition / photobook.

CURRENCY OF IMAGE: This event is part of IYC2011 and aims to be representative of the work chemists are currently involved in. In the spirit of this, photographs submitted for selection by curators must have been created (ie: originally recorded by the camera) no earlier than 01/01/2011.

DEADLINE: Any photographs for inclusion in the exhibition / photobook must be submitted before midnight on the 30th September 2011 to allow time for curating and event organisation.

i. your photograph must be at least 1024 pixels on the long side per photograph on your single digital file (ie: if you submit a diptych your actual submission needs to be 1024 pixels x 2 photographs = 2048 pixels on the long side). This will allow curators to accurately assess the quality of your image. Should your photograph be selected, you should be prepared to supply the highest resolution copy you have to allow for the best printing results.

ii. your photograph must abide by the THEME and the requirements identified therein.

iii. Ensure the title on Flickr is the title you want it to be exhibited as. If submitting via email, make sure you include the title.

VARIATION: Photographer/s wishing to request a variation to any of these Terms and Conditions must approach Capture a Chemist in writing a minimum of one (1) month before the closing date.

… AND FINALLY: The decisions of the Project Team and curators are final!
